Our school library is an inviting space where students may acquire knowledge and gain insight; a welcoming haven where children may seek respite from a demanding day; a stimulating place where they may open books and open their minds for a better tomorrow. The library program serves to instill a love of reading, inspire life-long learning, and foster independent library use. Students visit once a week with their class to check out materials and to practice information literacy skills and digital citizenship.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a practice component of reading. As with anything, the more you practice, the better you will be at that activity. At Faine Elementary, we want students to love reading and be great at it.

Students are given a STAR test at the beginning of the year. This test is given on the computer and gives the student a reading range. Students should choose books that fall within their range. Students read, then take AR tests on the computer. The goal is for students to pass the tests with 85% accuracy or higher. Students also earn points when passing AR tests. With practice, students reading ranges/levels will show growth.

AR books do not have to be checked out only in the library. Some of you have large libraries at home or go to the Public Library. One way to find out if a book is an AR book, you can check on the AR Bookfinder link below. Just type in the title of the book and if it is AR, it will show you the level and how many points the book is worth.
